Glossary of Words

Sumayah's vocabulary has been increasing exponentially over the past month. In fact, not merely her vocabulary, but her general understanding and use of the english language. For example, the other day, greatgranny Mama Gaya called out, "I'm going downstairs for porridge now, who's coming with me?, to which Sumayah called back, "Me!"

Now some may think "and?" because well it's a pretty easy word to say. But it's not the word itself, but the correct use indicates that she has developed a sense of herself as a separate identity and how that translates into language.

But amidst all this rapid development, it is so pleasurable for me to hear her gruff little voice communicating in her own feisty little way. She has her own little Sumayah language, so I thought it would be fun to do a little glossary of Sumayah language, so here goes:

Apper:       Apple or any other fruit which is not a banana or naartjie

Biekie:        Biscuit

Bumbie:      Barney

Goggie:       Doggie

Gonky:        Donkey

Hawow:     Hello

Hunday:     Oneday (referring to a story)

Huff-huff:    The 3 little pigs story

Kank you:  Thank you

Narna:        Banana or naartjie

Or-ee:        Ee-or (as in the donkey from winnie the pooh)

Punky:        Poncho (the name of the goggie next door)

Pees:          Please

Unker:        Uncle

I'm sure I must be forgetting some, but these are the most commonly used ones :)

  1. Ahhh, to cute, love it when they start talking. Aadam is starting as well, even sings Happy birthday in his own way and loves the attention that goes with it. Jameelah is 3 and not eager to talk so now my the older one's is saying Aadam gonna talk before Jameelah, lol. WE don't worry cause every child do things on their own time.
